Where Do the Enteric-Coated Capsules Dissolve?
The dissolution location and mechanism of the enteric-coated capsules are as follows:
Solubilization Location
Enteric-coated capsules mainly dissolve in the small intestine. This is because their outer shell is made of special enteric materials, which remain stable in acidic environments (such as the stomach) and do not dissolve; only when they enter the small intestine and come into contact with alkaline intestinal fluid will the capsule rapidly disintegrate and release the drug.

2. Dissolution Mechanism
Not dissolving in the stomach: The gastric acid is acidic, and the coating material of the enteric-coated capsule does not dissolve in an acidic environment. Therefore, the drug will not be released in the stomach, thus avoiding irritation to the stomach lining and protecting those drugs that are easily damaged by gastric acid.
Dissolving in the small intestine: When the drug enters the small intestine, the intestinal fluid is alkaline, and the capsule coating will rapidly dissolve, releasing the drug. This design ensures that the drug is effectively absorbed in the small intestine, thereby exerting its efficacy.

3. Dissolution Time
The time it takes for an enteric-coated capsule to dissolve from oral administration usually depends on the rate of gastric emptying:
Take on an empty stomach: Generally, it takes 2-3 hours for the drug to be emptied from the stomach and enter the small intestine, where it begins to dissolve.
Take after a meal: Since food slows down the gastric emptying rate, the dissolution time may be shortened to 1-1.5 hours.
